Anorexia is the desire to shed one’s body. It is the conflicting need to be seen while not wanting to be seen; the burning, overwhelming hunger that can’t be sustained but which must be. Like a star, the anorexic burns fuel that isn’t replenished. The total mass of her body is the principal determinant of her fate. She is held together by her own gravity.

Binary Star is told from the point of view of a nameless, anorexic woman in the grip of a dysfunctional relationship with an alcoholic boyfriend. They embark on a road trip around the U.S. that they hope will help them overcome their addictions. When they buy a book on veganarchism at a small bookstore in Portland, they think they’ve found the direction they’ve been looking for. Instead they discover, against their better intentions, that they can only fuel each others’ inevitable implosions.

Binary Star’s highly poetic style interweaves astronomical research with plot-driven prose in a taut, driven story that grasps the reader from the opening line, and pulls her into a bewildering, nihilistic, incomprehensible world. Fascinated, she cannot leave until the final line.
